Dr. Karen L. Whisnant Chief Academic and Compliance Officer

Dr. Karen L. Whisnant currently holds the title of Chief Academic and Compliance Officer for Convenient Computing, Inc. With more than 20 years of experience in public education, Dr. Whisnant now brings this expertise into the growing Charter School movement.
Dr. Whisnant has served as an elementary and high school principal. She has taught at the elementary and middle school levels. She has also worked at the district office level as Director of English Learner Services for Secondary Schools and as the LEA CALPADS administrator. In addition, she has taught teacher methods and masters classes as an adjunct college professor. As an experienced administrator and college professor, she holds the right balance of education, diverse experiences, vision, leadership skills, and passion for the needs of students.
Dr. Whisnant’s personal and professional history has been one of continuous growth and life long learning. She holds a Doctor of Education Degree in Organizational Leadership, a Master’s Degree in Education, majoring in curriculum and instruction, an Administrative Services Credential, a Louisiana teaching credential, and a California Clear Teaching Credential with a CLAD certificate. Her dissertation topic was on instructional strategies that increase literacy achievement in English Learners. Currently her dissertation written for elementary English Learners is being replicated for high school students. She serves as a member of this dissertation committee.
Dr. Whisnant has presented on many topics, some of which include: Data Driven Decision Making, Standards-Based Instructional Practices, Closing the Achievement Gap, Response to Intervention, Professional Learning Communities, Data Management, and Planning for the Learning Needs of English Learners. As a result of vision setting, open communication, and collaborative leadership, Dr. Whisnant is able to align stakeholders around a common vision for student engagement and increased academic achievement.
Integral to Dr. Whisnant’s work is the integration of technology for student engagement and learning. Her background includes, not only writing technology plans, but also using these plans to guide decision making at the site level for the use of technology to prepare students for a global future and academic success.
Her recent work with Charter Schools has proven to be her most exciting venture yet. She has had the opportunity to bring her rich, diverse, and innovative background into the Charter School vision and movement. This vision and movement to transform education to empower learners and prepare them for the 21st century, is a work that has Dr. Whisnant’s full dedication and commitment.
